Republic of Texas Presidential Campaigns

It is after the Texas Revolution and Texas, a new republic, is now suffering the aftermath of war and peace. The citizens of this new country are confused and afraid. You must prevent them from panicking before the CRISIS leaves your new government vulnerable to a takeover from another country.

Your groups will form a POLITICAL PARTY; you must decide together how you think the new nation’s problems should be solved. Then you must choose the best person from your group to represent your views, making this person YOUR NOMINEE for President of Texas. As a candidate he/she will debate your political party’s reasoning for solving Texas’ problems in the ways you have chosen. Then the “people” of Texas will vote for a President of the Republic of Texas.

Considering the definitions of revolution found below, the quotes about revolution, and your knowledge of the Texas Revolution, do you believe the Texans had a legitimate reason to declare themselves independent of Mexico? Why or why not.

Using the steps provided in the power point and that you copied into your spiral notebook, create a “Step 3” plan for the Texans.

Remember: Step 3 involved creating a new government and you need to keep the below aspects in mind.
–Create new government/constitution ‘you say you’ll change the constitution’
–Provide for essential services
–Come up with specific plan to solve the previous problems to prevent them from reoccurring (learn from history!)

NOTE: You do not need to write an actual constitution, but rather come up with a specific plan to solve problems of the past and provide for essential services and needs of the people.

1.Read the below prompt and respond accordingly on a SEPARATE sheet of paper.

The United States government is greatly concerned about the events taking place in Texas and worries that an independent Texas could lead to annexation /slavery issues in the United States. The U.S. wants to see Texas remain part of Mexico and decides to send their top rated arbitrator to San Antonio to make suggestions to the Texas contingency and Mexican government on how to salvage their political relationship. YOU are that arbitrator.

Based on the above information and the information you gathered on the chart in class today, write a single letter, addressed to both the Texas and Mexican leaders, suggesting five ways in which the two groups can resolve their issues peacefully. Remember: As an arbitrator, you need to make suggestions that will appease both groups, as well as make compromise look like the best option.

This letter should be completed with proper grammar and spelling. It does not need to be typed, but should be completed in legible writing that all students would be able to read.

Goofus and Gallant Cartoon

You may have to do further research to create a thoughtful argument. However, I do not expect for you to do an deep analysis of the explorer's time here in Texas...we'll save that for a later date. : )

Spiral Notebook Quiz

1. Consider the terms values and interests, and what each of these terms means to you.
2. Create a list (does NOT have to be turned in) of things you value or hold interest to you in your life.
3. Using that list, pick the four things (values or interests) that are MOST important to you.
4. Briefly sketch out a symbol for each of the four values/interests. (This also does NOT have to be turned in.)
5. CREATIVELY place the symbols you came up with on your shield you received in class. You can do the following:
        -Glue on symbols
        -Draw your symbols
        -Use other materials to create your symbols
        -Think outside of the box and display your creative and artistic talents

YOU SHOULD NOT:
        -Turn in a shield that is messy, completed in pencil (lead pencil, colored are okay)
        -Turn in a shield that does not demonstrate your values/interests
