Website Changes

In order to provide a more user-friendly website, I polled a few of my classes to see how the site could improve. Taking the student suggestions into account, the following changes have been made.

1. A homework calendar has been created. It is on the website's homepage. The homework will show up on the DATE it is ASSIGNED.

2. I have reorganized the Navigation Bar. Each grade will have two navigation options. One option will take you directly to the grade level page, where you will find links to Spiral Notebook, Masteries, and Essential Elements (Daily Work). The second option will take you directly to the Homework page.

If you have any further suggestions or have trouble with the new configuration, please let me know. : )

Have a great weekend!

WELCOME!

Welcome to United States History and Texas History! I very much look forward to working with each of you this year and believe that together we can make this your most interesting and exciting year of history yet. Through discussion, debate, research, and group activities, you will discover your own perspective on historical events, as well as learn to analyze the myriad of  historical interpretations available to students today. It is my goal to not only prepare you for academics to come, but help you develop the skills and foundation necessary to become an informed and active citizen.

Required Materials for History Class

Below are the materials you will need to be successful in your history this year, as well as materials that may make the year a little easier for you and your classmates. Please let me know if you have any trouble finding or acquiring the materials and I will be more than happy to help. : )

Required Materials:
1. Spiral Notebook
-This should be a single-subject spiral notebook with approximately 70 pages. Please do NOT bring a spiral notebook that has perforated edges. A composition will work, but you may have trouble gluing in maps and paperwork formatted for a standard sized spiral.

2. A blue or black pen

3. Loose-leaf lined paper

It would be nice if you could bring these, but they are not required:
1. Colored pencils
2. A box of tissues

Words that Guide US

From time to time I will post significant writings, predominantly primary sources, that exemplify the unit of study for either U.S. History, Texas History, or both. If a quote or excerpt comes directly from a source we have studied or will be studying in class, I will provide an extra credit assignment for that quote/excerpt. Only students who have turned in all assignments will be allowed to complete the extra credit assignment.

Below is a quote from an English journalist. The quote fits nicely with the first unit of study in U.S. History in which we examine historiography and bias in history. Please feel free to read and discuss the implications of the quote in regards to how you've studied history in the past.

"Historians are not just dispassionate chroniclers. By their selection, ordering, highlighting, attribution and analysis of facts they fashion a particular version of the past. And they also play a part in the disputes of the present, by legitimizing or undermining the rationales, heroes and myths which influence current debates. Historical figures are forever being conscripted for fresh cultural battles."

"Truth, trust and rewriting history"
